Nothing says summer like a happy dog enjoying the outdoors!

Common Summer Risks for Pets

Whether you’re planning a vacation, spending more time outdoors, or simply enjoying the longer days of summer, taking a few extra precautions can help keep your pets safe, healthy, and comfortable throughout the season.

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors with our pets, but it also brings unique risks that every pet owner should be aware of. At pup-e-cise and kit-e-cat care of Schenectady County, safety always comes first. Whether we’re walking dogs, caring for cats, or providing pet sitting services, we take extra precautions during the warmer months to ensure every pet stays safe and comfortable.

Here are some of the things all pet owners should be aware of when enjoying the summer fun with our best friends:

Summer Safety Tips

  • Schedule walks during cooler parts of the day.
  • Provide plenty of fresh water.
  • Never leave pets unattended in vehicles.
  • Check pavement temperature before walks.
  • Keep pets up to date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
  • Provide shaded areas when outdoors.
  • Ensure identification tags and microchip information are current.
  • Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays whenever possible.

Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke

Dogs and cats can quickly overheat during hot weather. Signs of heat-related illness include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and difficulty breathing. Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes, as temperatures can rise rapidly.

Hot Pavement

Asphalt and concrete can become dangerously hot during the summer months. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Whenever possible, walk dogs during the cooler morning or evening hours. Unfortunately, most of our walks are midday, so we limit our time outside and seek shaded areas whenever possible.

Dehydration

Fresh, clean water should always be available. Pets can become dehydrated quickly, especially during outdoor activities. If possible, bring water with you on walks and outings. Offer cool, fresh water frequently during hot weather and encourage pets to drink small amounts at a time if they have been active outdoors.

Summer Storms and Fireworks

Thunderstorms and fireworks can cause significant anxiety for many pets. Create a safe, quiet space indoors where your pet can retreat during loud events.

Toxic Plants and Garden Products

Summer gardens are beautiful, but some plants, fertilizers, and pesticides can be harmful to pets. Always monitor pets when they’re exploring outdoor spaces.

Water Safety

Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Whether at a pool, lake, or beach, supervise pets around water and consider a life jacket for dogs that enjoy boating or swimming.
